Vic; Police stakeout yields three-tonne drug cache

Police and customs officers seized almost three tonnes of hashish from two shipping
containers at the Port of Melbourne yesterday.

Federal police acting general manager ADRIAN MCKNIGHT says the 50-member stakeout team
arrested five men.

They allege they found up to three tonnes of hashish, or cannabis resin - worth at
least $15 million wholesale and up to 10 times that on the street.

Five Melbourne men have appeared in the Magistrates Court charged with possessing a
prohibited import and being knowingly concerned with the importation of a prohibited import.

The maximum penalty is life in jail.
