Officials hope law has bite

State health officials hope a new law that goes into effect nextmonth will help West Virginians keep their teeth longer.

Legislators recently created an Office of Oral Health within thestate Department of Health and Human Resources. The now-focusedeffort on healthy teeth will give the new office the clout to qualifyfor foundation grants, said Gail Bellamy of the West VirginiaInstitute for Health Policy Research.

With grant money, the state could hire a full-time dentist,implement dental health programs in day-care centers and publicschools, develop mouth guards for athletes in school colors, pay fordental hygienists to visit nursing …
