LOCAL AM STATIONS PICKING UP ON SPORTS BROADCAST TREND.(Sports)

Check the local radio listings on today's Scoreboard page (C-14). Four National Football League games are available, another tomorrow night. The New York Rangers and New York Knicks also can be heard Monday night.

Later in the week there is Siena basketball, RPI hockey and Cornell hockey.

A trend appears to have developed in this market whereby many stations are filling the AM airwaves with sports programming. It is a bonus to the sports fan without access to television, but just how many people can that be?

"You're appealing to a smaller segment of the market," said John Kelly, general manager of WPTR, "but it's a loyal and active audience."
