Vic: Explosion believed to have caused power failure

MELBOURNE, Dec 3 AAP - A power failure that left 13,500 inner Melbourne customers without
electricity is thought to have been caused by an explosion.

The outage affected homes, businesses and traffic lights in the Richmond, Abbotsford
and Hawthorn areas, Citipower spokesman Damien Batey told AAP.

He said the company had received unconfirmed reports of an explosion at a substation
on Church Street, North Richmond that occurred about 9.30am (AEDT) on Thursday.

Power was returned about 10.20am but crews are yet to determine the cause.

"We've had customer reports of an explosion," Mr Batey said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were on scene to manage traffic.
