FED:Greens can't pick and choose science:Bligh

CANBERRA, Aug 19 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says the Australian Greens have
to accept the science on coal seam gas like it does on climate change.

Greens Leader Bob Brown had questioned this week whether coal seam gas would reduce
global emissions.

"There is absolutely no doubt that if Australia wants a cleaner energy future, then
gas has to be a part of that and it has to be a part of our transition," Ms Bligh told
reporters in Canberra on Friday.

State and territory leaders are in the capital for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

Ms Bligh said she was "very disappointed" with comments from Mr Brown and other Greens
senators questioning the science on coal seam gas.

"Frankly you can't pick and choose your science to suit your ideology," she said.

"You either believe the science of climate change, believe the science of coal seam
gas emissions or you don't."

The Queensland premier said her state was highly motivated to act on climate change.

"If the state and as a nation fail to act on climate change, one of the first things
that we will be in trouble with is the Great Barrier Reef.

"That is a great employer in Queensland as well as a very important environmental heritage
for the world."

Vic:New programs for Black Saturday survivors

KINGLAKE, Vic, Feb 1 AAP - The body co-ordinating recovery efforts after the devastating
Black Saturday bushfires will be wound up at mid-year and several new programs introduced.

The Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority will close by the end of June.

Premier Ted Baillieu announced a range of new programs and pledged never to forget
all those affected by the Black Saturday fires, which killed 173 people.

"We will not forget, we will not ignore, and we will not turn our backs on these communities,"

he told reporters in Kinglake on Tuesday.

From July 1, a new bushfire recovery unit within Regional Development Victoria will
serve as a one-stop shop for people needing help after the 2009 fires.

A new community support program will be introduced, as well as a program to help councils
in the 10 communities most affected by the fires.

The Mobile Rebuilding Advisory Service will continue this year, and three community
engagement coordinators will continue their work until December 2012.

Bushfire Response Minister Peter Ryan said the support programs would continue for
the next 16 months and be evaluated continually.

He said the government would not suddenly cut support and would ensure no one fell
through the cracks.

Mr Ryan said the government remained committed to carrying out all the recommendations
from the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.

NSW: TV and radio ads set to warn motorists to slow down.

New data shows speed .. alcohol and fatigue remain the biggest cause of fatal vehicle crashes.

Despite the grim facts .. last year's official NSW road toll of 435 was the lowest
since World War 2 .. according to a government report.

With more motorists took more notice of road safety messages .. fatal crashes involving
speeding dropped from 40 per cent to 32 percent in 2007.

NSW Roads Minister MICHAEL DALEY says the toll was at a record low last year despite
there being 13 times as many vehicles on the road .. 10 times as many licensed drivers
and double the population since 1945.

The RTA Road Traffic Crashes in NSW 2007 report shows there were still 140 people killed
and thousands injured as a result of speeding.

Mr DALEY says 127 million dollars will be spent on road safety projects .. road upgrades
and maintenance programs to help address the problem.

Fed: Waterfront workers to down tools at 10am

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: Waterfront workers to down tools at 10am

CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - Dock workers across Australia will stop work for a minute tomorrow
morning to mark the tenth anniversary of the waterfront dispute.

On April 7, 1998, balaclava clad security guards took control of the wharves on behalf
of port owners - in a move backed by the then coalition government.

Strike breakers were bused in and for weeks unionised workers manned picket lines and
tried to block the new staff from going to work.

A peace deal was finally agreed to in June 1998, part of which involved 700 redundancies,
contracting-out of labour, abandonment of pending legal action and the signing of new
enterprise agreements.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's stop work minute, Maritime Union of Australia national
secretary Paddy Crumlin declared the dispute "turbulent" and "dreadful".

"We remember a turbulent time on the waterfront - a dispute that not only threatened
the job security of more than 2,000 workers - but took a sometimes dreadful toll on their
families as well," Mr Crumlin said in a statement.

"We remember the way the Howard government orchestrated the attack on these workers,
the tactics of using dogs and hoons in balaclavas to clear the docks and the secret training
of mercenaries in Dubai to replace them."

The anniversary of the dispute has brought a renewed call from the Maritime Union of
Australia for government documents about the fight to be released.

"While the defeat of the Howard government last year marked the end of the national
attack on Australian workers, questions remain about the role elected representatives
played in breaching federal laws," Mr Crumlin said.

The dock workers will stop work at 10am.

Vic: Cancer survival rates improve, for some more than others

Victoria's cancer survival rates are improving .. but country patients .. are at a
disadvantage .. according to latest figures.

A cancer survival report by the Cancer Council .. shows the overall five-year cancer
survival rate in Victoria improved from 48 per cent in 1990 to 61 per cent in 2004.

However .. the report found country patients had a three percentage point less chance
of surviving the disease than people in the city.

Report author DALLAS ENGLISH says the reasons are not clear but it could be later diagnosis

Qld: Corby's mum says govt lying over security cameras

BRISBANE, April 6 AAP - The mother of convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby and her
former lawyer are angry security breaches at Sydney airport were not made public earlier.

Federal Labor MP John Murphy said the evidence raised fresh concerns about a string
of drug cases, in particular that of Corby who was jailed last year for trying to smuggle
cannabis into Bali.

Mr Murphy said two cameras inside the baggage handling unit had been sabotaged on three
occasions between October 2004 and May 2005.

The cameras had been used to monitor the behaviour of baggage handlers as they sifted
through luggage behind the airport's check-in.

In answer to a question on notice to federal parliament, Justice Minister Chris Ellison
confirmed the cameras had been moved.

Corby was arrested at Bali's Denpasar Airport in October 2004 after authorities found
four kg of cannabis in her bodyboard bag.

Despite claiming Australian baggage handlers were responsible for the cannabis being
in the bag, Corby was convicted by a Bali court and given a 20 year sentence.

Her mother Rosleigh Rose today maintained her daughter's innocence and said the federal
government was not telling the truth.

"They have used my daughter to cover their own arses and it's all going to blow up
in their faces," Ms Rose said.

"She has to come home because she is innocent."

One of Corby's former lawyers, Robin Tampoe, said the government should have offered
the information earlier.

"These are all things that they knew," he told ABC Radio.

"They were all things we were screaming and begging for in terms of our defence of
Schapelle Corby but it was denied to us.

"As these things seem to do, they bubble to the surface but they bubble up too late.

"Her appeal process has been exhausted and from where I sit, I'm just very angry about it."

MARCUS TRESCOTHICK top scored for England with 90, ANDREW FLINTOFF made 68 and KEVIN
PIETERSEN 71.

38% of Irish adults are now online.(according to Amarach report)(Statistical Data Included)

EUROPEMEDIA-(C)2002 Van Dusseldorp & Partners - http://www.vandusseldorp.com/

Internet penetration has now reached 38 per cent of Irish adults, which is equivalent to an estimated 1,065,000 adult users and represents a significant increase of 5 per cent on figures recorded last year, according to a new report from Amarach.

"The rate of growth in internet use has slowed down and AmArach expect this to continue," said Bettina MacCarvill, Senior Consultant AmArach. "We forecast that an additional 5 per cent of Irish adults will go online within the next 12 months and that by mid-2004 almost half the adult population will be internet users". In international terms, the study finds that Ireland's relative internet population is similar to that of the UK but lags someway behind the US where internet penetration is over 60 per cent. In Europe, the Nordic countries continue to have the highest levels of internet penetration.

Preliminary research from AmArach suggests that Ireland's economy impacting the consumer online market. After months of continued growth, the numbers buying online fell for the first time in a year. An estimated 188,000 internet users made an online purchase in the last 3 months compared to 238,000 at the beginning of the year. In percentage terms 18 per cent of internet users made an online purchase compared to 24 per cent at the start of the year. "The slowdown may reflect slower domestic economic conditions," said Michael McLoughlin, Director, AmArach. "It may also reflect seasonality not evident in the offline market. The fact that travel services are a very significant component of online purchases may also be affecting the timing of online purchases."

Travel services, specifically airline tickets, continue to account for the bulk of online purchases, according to the report. Books, CDs and tickets for events also continue to be big online sellers.

It further finds that the ability to shop online at any time of day or night is the most frequently cited benefit enticing people to shop online. "This was especially evident among 25-34 year olds," said Bettina MacCarvill, Senior Consultant, Amarach "This is a money-rich, time-poor group who place real value on convenience and are willing to pay a premium to get it". Over four in ten (45 per cent) said they could get better deals or cost-savings by shopping online. The ability to compare products and prices from different websites appealed to a significant number. Avoidance of queues and dealing with sales people was also considered a major benefit.

The future for online shopping remains reasonable - three in ten internet users said they were likely to shop online in the next three months. Not having a credit card is the main barrier to online shopping, particularly among younger internet users. Security concerns continue to be a major barrier. Two-thirds (66 per cent) of internet users agree that companies are not doing enough to demonstrate the security and safety of online shopping. "There appears to be a demand for a more visible security initiative among online retailers," said Michael McLoughlin "Many internet users remain unconvinced of the security of using their credit card online". Cyber-catalogue helps electronics retailer branch out.(Business Times)(The Browser)

Crutchfield Corp.'s (www.crutchfield.com) success and the World Wide Web have something in common. Both found early acceptance based on the delivery of information.

"Twenty-five years ago I differentiated myself from other consumer catalogues by providing information about a complex category of product - car stereos and their installation - through articles I added to the catalogue," said Bill Crutchfield from his Charlottesville, Va. home office.

"And we are continuing to do that with the Web site, creating a synergy for the customers whether they access us via a printed catalogue, through the call center or on line."

Over the last quarter century Crutchfield has been working on creating a relationship with consumers by delivering electronics products, ranging from subwoofers to high definition televisions, at a competitive price with thorough installation and operating instructions.

The company's personalized, hands-on formula for catalogue sales has allowed the data and expertise it has collected to transfer to its Web site. Comparing the Winter/Spring 2000 catalogue to the Web site, they basically provide the same products, pricing and information.

"The philosophy is that there is one Crutchfield that you deal with and each offer the same services regardless of how the customer decides to interact with us," said Dave Dierolf, vice president, information technology. "It was a conscious decision not to become a dot-com company spin-off. It is all one company, and this is just another way to communicate."

For Bill Crutchfield who, in 1974, began his business from a dining room table with $1,000, the key to his success in the catalogue and cyberworld is the same - customer service combined with employee knowledge.

All new staff members are required to take an eight week training program along with a few weeks of on-the-job training. This training is especially crucial to call center employees who must answer any consumer questions about anything that has anything to do with the car and home audio/video market.

The company has 600 employees and operates two call centers - one in Charlottesville and one in Norton, Va.

"Of all the calls I receive I would guess that about 45 percent of them have at least seen the Internet site while maybe half of those callers have only seen the Internet site," said Tyler Kilgore, an operator in Norton.

"I find that those who have been to the Internet and have a catalogue have really done a lot of research regarding their purchase and all that training becomes very important. The Internet user has the same questions as the catalogue shopper, including product specifications and installation procedures."

Mr. Kilgore and the other call center operators get help from a large database of product information and installation specifications that Crutchfield has been collecting. One element of this database, the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector, can be accessed through the Internet site. The vehicle selector works by the user selecting the year, make and model of his car. The site then responds with a list of audio items that are compatible with that vehicle.

Last year Crutchfield Corp. mailed 32 million catalogues, and anticipates mailing more than 37 million this year. And though the print run is expected to increase by 15 percent, the company is expecting its overall growth to increase by 20 percent due to the Internet's ability to bring consumers to Crutchfield without the cost of printing and shipping the catalogues.

"The Web site does offer benefits over the catalogue such as ease of updating and the ability to add more products," Mr. Crutchfield said. "Yet for some customers the catalogue is easier to index. The Internet is more of a left-brain medium, while the catalogue is a right brain medium. Shopping via the catalogue has an emotional element that is lost when shopping on-line.

"For Crutchfield, we recognize that our consumers are both kinds of people, and we service both."

The catalogue and Internet company also has two brick-and-mortar retail stores located in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg.

RECOMMENDED USER GROUP: Individuals looking to purchase a wide range of consumer electronics.

WHAT'S TO LIKE: Each product page on the site is filled with information. For example, being that I am interested in the newest digital video disk technology, a search for the term DVD brings up 19 players ranging in cost from $279 to $999. Choosing a Sony brand for $599, I learn that the vendor delivered the world's first five-disc DVD/CD changer and that I can load this machine with a combination of movie and music entertainment.

Most product pages also include a lengthy Key Features list and under the heading More Information consumers can learn an item's Features/Specifications and Accessories. Other sections include "Nitty-Gritty," which explains what a unit is compatible with, comments from product experts, and discussions on its dependability; and "What's In The Box," which provides an inventory list of everything shipped in the box with a particular product - from the warranty and advertising cards to remote changers and batteries."

WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE: Crutchfield will have to continue to work hard to succeed in the competitive e-commerce market of the Internet. I found DVD units at the same price on other sites with plenty of product information and was offered enticements like $75 worth of free movies. The guy who knows how to hook up basic audio and video equipment might be more concerned with the cheapest price and incentives rather than thoughtful customer service.

Sulaimon Brown finally testifies on Gray's campaign; Recounts meetings, purported payoffs.(METRO)

Byline: Tom Howell Jr., THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The D.C. politician whose allegations wreaked havoc on the Gray administration before it ever got rolling, strode into city hall on Monday to finally give his on-the-record account about purported campaign payoffs and other electoral irregularities.

Under court order, former 2010 mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown told a D.C. Council committee investigating potential nepotism and questionable hiring practices by Mayor Vincent C. Gray, that he first met Mr Gray and his campaign chairman at Howard University in late June 2010. That set off a stream of purported payments and the promise of a job for bashing then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty during the campaign.

Mr. Brown's highly anticipated testimony before the Committee on Government Operations and the Environment began with TV cameras following him into a hearing room at the John A. Wilson Building. Surrounded by a cult of personality since his explosive allegations began in February, Mr. Brown donned sunglasses for the event and refused to take them off.

His testimony was contentious at times, and he frequently interrupted committee Chairwoman Mary M. Cheh and committee member David Catania, whom Mr. Brown called a witness in the hearings.

Mr. Brown also testified that he met with Gray campaign Chairman Lorraine Green in the rotunda of Union Station after meeting Mr. Gray to lay out his request for a city job and payments to support his own campaign.

He said Ms. Green said something like: Talking to me is like talking to Vince.

Mr. Brown said he received a $110,000-a-year job at the Department of Healthcare Finance in January. He was fired in late February over questions surrounding his past and behavior on the job.

He said such disrespect and character assassination prompted him to go public with his accusations about a quid pro quo agreement on the campaign trail.

Mrs. Cheh sought and was granted the court order forcing Mr. Brown to testify after more than a dozen witnesses described a fast-track pattern of hiring by the Gray administration.

Mr. Brown also insulted council members' qualifications.

I have two jobs, and you have none, Mr. Catania responded at one point. I'm clear now why you were fired .., but what remains unclear to me is why you were hired in the first place

Mr. Brown carried a manila folder with purported copies of money orders said to have been provided to him by campaign consultant Howard Brooks and signed by members of Brooks' family. He testified about the documents, but declined to provide them to the committee until he consulted with an attorney over Ms. Cheh's formal request for the documents.

Mr. Brown laid out a timeline of the purported payments and their location. Among them, he testified, was an Aug 4 meeting with Mr. Gray and Mr. Brooks outside the Eatonville restaurant to thank him for assistance in a debate. He said Mr. Brooks then gave him a payment.

Mr. Brown testified he recorded payments in his income-tax returns, prompting Mr. Catania to request a copy.

Mr. Gray, a Democrat, has said Mr. Brown was promised only a job interview, but was given no payments to his knowledge and made no quid pro quo agreements to attack Mr. Fenty.

But Mr. Brown claimed on Monday that his early criticism of Mr. Fenty won the Gray campaign over, notably his turn of phrase, Go Brown, go Gray, go any color but Fenty.

I just said it one time, but they wanted me to continue to say it, Mr. Brown said of the Gray team.

Mr. Gray's former chief of staff, Gerri Mason Hall, has testified she offered Mr. Brown a job so he would not pester the mayor anymore.

Mr. Brown said he wanted a job in the Office of the Inspector General, but one posted on the Internet had been filled, and he complained to Ms. Hall.

He testified that Ms. Hall said it would be OK and that she would take care of it. After reporting to work at Healthcare Finance on Jan. 31, he said he received kudos for his performance - before he was dismissed.

I think it was an illegal firing, period, he said.

Mr. Brown said no one knew about the purported agreement besides Mr. Gray, Ms. Green, Mr. Brooks and his friend, identified as Bernice.

Mr. Brown's appearance was preceded by testimony from Cherita Whiting, who was hired for a job in the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation and resigned amid reports about her criminal background.

She said she does not know why she was called before the committee.

I feel like I deserved the position, not because of the job I did on the campaign, Ms. Whiting said, noting she was interviewed by the chiefs of staff for the mayor and the agency. Let me state that again: I was interviewed.

According to testimony, Ms. Whiting checked yes on the part of her job application asking whether she had been convicted of a felony in the last 10 years. However, she had not checked it on her application to work for Council member Phil Mendelson, at-large Democrat, about one year prior, citing the impending close of the 10-year grace period.

Mr. Catania said that would make more sense if it were the other way around. He also noted that the page marked Yes, will explain on this year's form was not signed, although a residency form in her employment packet had been.

Ms. Whiting said she contributed greatly to the city agency during her brief time there, but pressure to resign came down from Judy Banks, former personnel director for the Gray transition, after reports in The Washington Times about her background.

LEADER OF MIAMI-BASED INTERNET PILL MILL OPERATION CONVICTED.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The following information was released by the office of the Florida Attorney General:

Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that the ringleader of a Miami pill mill operation was convicted on numerous counts of selling adulterated prescription medication. Abel Rodriguez oversaw the operation that had been illegally filling more than $10 million worth of Internet drug orders for approximately one year. Rodriguez was prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office of Statewide Prosecution.

Rodriguez and several co-conspirators filled nationwide orders for powerful painkillers and other medications without prescriptions or pharmacists. The vast majority of the drug distributions were for hydrocodone, but also included alprazolam, phentermine and other prescription drugs. Rodriguez, 53, was arrested in July 2005 after a nine-month investigation by the Miami-area Drug Diversion Response Team which included the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and Office of Statewide Prosecution, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state Department of Health.

According to authorities, the group operated at several locations throughout Miami-Dade County, including Nuria's La Familia Pharmacy, JR Pharmacy, KandN Group and International Latin Medical Corp., to order and receive large wholesale shipments of various medications. Investigators found no valid prescriptions for filled Internet orders; in some instances, the only requirement imposed on the person requesting the pills was completion of an Internet questionnaire.

The investigation revealed that once the medications were received at the various pharmacies, they would be shipped to other locations throughout South Florida where the pills would be counted, packaged, labeled and prepared for distribution. The investigation also revealed that several of the pharmacies never opened for legitimate business and were only being used as "fronts" or "shell" businesses to order the medications.

Rodriguez was convicted of dispensing pharmaceuticals without a pharmacist's license and dealing in adulterated or misbranded pharmaceuticals. He is scheduled to appear before Judge Julio Jimenez tomorrow morning in Miami-Dade Circuit Court for a bond hearing prior to his March sentencing date.

Serena Software Announces Preliminary Second Quarter Fiscal 2006 Results.

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Serena Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SRNA), announced today preliminary second quarter financial results for the fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2005. Based on preliminary estimates, the company expects license revenues to be in the range of $18.5 to $19.5 million and total revenues in the range of $59 to $60 million compared to the second quarter guidance, provided at the time of the first quarter of fiscal 2006 earnings press release, of total revenues in the range of $64 to $66 million. Non-GAAP net income per fully diluted share is expected to be $0.31 to $0.32 and GAAP net income per fully diluted share is expected to be $0.17 to $0.18. These earnings estimates are at the low end or slightly below the company's original guidance of $0.32 to $0.33 in non-GAAP net income per fully diluted share and $0.19 to $0.20 in GAAP net income per fully diluted share.

These results are preliminary and actual results could vary materially when the company reports final earnings for the second quarter of fiscal 2006 on August 18, 2005 after the market close. Further details on the company's expectations going forward will be provided in that conference call.

"We continue to experience delays in closing large transactions due to rigorous purchasing processes. I believe that the second half seasonality of Information Technology spending has increased significantly over the last couple of years, particularly for bigger deals. We are focused on improving sales force execution and productivity going forward" said Mark Woodward, CEO and President. "We remain in outstanding financial shape with a business model focused on profitability and cash flows and I believe we are well positioned for the second half of this fiscal year."

This press release contains "forward-looking statements" under the Private Securities Reform Act of 1995. There can be no assurance that future results will be achieved, and actual results could differ materially from forecasts and estimates. Factors that could cause or contribute to such differences include, but are not limited to, the percentage of license revenue typically closed at the end of each quarter making estimation of operating results prior to the end of the quarter extremely uncertain; weak economic conditions worldwide which may continue to affect the overall demand for software and services, which has resulted in and could continue to result in decreased revenues or lower revenue growth rates; our ability to successfully integrate our acquisition of Merant plc.; changes in revenue mix and seasonality; dependence on revenues from our installed base; the expansion of our international organizations; continued demand for additional mainframe MIPS capacity; our ability to complete the assessment of internal controls over financial reporting as of January 31, 2006, as required by Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which may impact market perception of the reliability of our internal controls over financial reporting and thus adversely affect the market price of our common stock; and our ability to manage our growth. Information about potential factors that could affect the Company's financial results is included in the Company's Form 10-K filed on April 8, 2005 and Form 10-Q filed on June 9, 2005. Serena assumes no obligation to update the forward-looking information contained in this press release.

GAAP to non-GAAP Reconciliation

Serena management evaluates and makes operating decisions using various operating measures. These measures are generally based on the revenues of its product, maintenance and services operations and certain costs of these operations, such as cost of revenues, research and development, sales and marketing and general and administrative expenses. Such measures include non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP net income per share. We have outlined below the type and scope of the amounts excluded in calculating these non-GAAP measures and the limitations on the use of these non-GAAP measures as a result of these exclusions. These non-GAAP measures are not an alternative to measures calculated in accordance with GAAP. Investors and potential investors in our securities should not rely on the use of these non-GAAP measures as a substitute for any GAAP financial measure. In addition, our calculation of these non-GAAP measures may or may not be consistent with that of other companies. We strongly urge investors and potential investors not to rely on any single financial measure to evaluate our business.

Serena views non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP earnings per share as operating performance measures, and as such it believes that the GAAP financial measures most directly comparable to them are net income and net income per share, respectively. Non-GAAP net income and net income per share differ from comparable GAAP measures in that they exclude the amortization of intangible assets and charges relating to the purchase accounting adjustments for the acquisition of Merant, amortization of acquired technology and intangible assets, stock based compensation, restructuring, acquisition and other charges.

Management believes it is useful in measuring Serena's operations to exclude amortization of intangible assets and charges relating to the purchase accounting adjustments for the acquisition of Merant because these costs are primarily fixed at the time of the acquisition and generally cannot be changed by management in the short term, or represent significant costs not related to current operations. Non-GAAP net income is helpful in more clearly highlighting trends in its core business that may not otherwise be apparent when relying solely on GAAP financial measures, because these non-GAAP measures eliminate financial items that have less bearing on Serena's operating performance. Serena believes it is useful to investors to see how management separates initial acquisition costs from its view of Serena's current and future continuing operations.
